Project Controls Starter Kit — controls in place from day one.

Most projects bolt controls on after the drift has started. This kit gives you the baseline set from the first week — a WBS cost tracker, a schedule baseline, a single change register, and a period report — so every later conversation starts from a record, not a recollection.

What it does.

The Project Controls Starter Kit bundles the four templates every capital project needs before the first commitment is made. The cost tracker compares budget, committed, actual, and forecast per WBS element and flags any line drifting past 5% or 10% tolerance. The schedule baseline records baseline against current dates per workstream, with status and percentage complete. The change register gives scope, cost, and schedule change one controlled route. The period report turns all of it into a single honest status.

The web tool runs the full set in your browser with a live Gantt view and printable period report. The Excel workbook carries the three registers plus a dashboard that computes your cost, schedule, and change position automatically.

Inside the free edition.

  • Interactive web tool — cost tracker, schedule baseline with Gantt bars and milestones, change register, and a print-ready period report. Nothing installed, nothing sent to a server.
  • Dynamic Excel workbook — cost, schedule, and change registers with dropdowns, live variance and slip formulas, and tolerance highlighting.
  • A dashboard sheet that reads the registers and states your cost, schedule, and change position — your one-page period report.
  • An honest overall reading — the dashboard names the pressure point, not just the numbers.
  • Works in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc.

Questions, answered.

What is a project controls starter kit?

The minimum set of registers and reports a project needs to control cost, schedule, and change from its first week: a WBS-based cost tracker comparing budget, committed, actual, and forecast; a schedule baseline recording what was promised against what is now forecast; a single change register through which every change passes; and a period report that turns those registers into one honest status.

Is the Project Controls Starter Kit really free?

It will be. The free edition launches without a sign-up wall once final release checks are complete. Until then, preview it here and register interest via the contact form — we will send it the moment it ships. The full instrument remains part of a stomwerk engagement.

Does the workbook work in Google Sheets and LibreOffice?

Yes. It uses standard formulas, dropdown validation, and conditional formatting that behave identically in Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc.

When should I set up project controls?

Before the first commitment is made — ideally in the first week. Controls added later inherit whatever drift has already happened: no clean baseline, no variance history, and changes that arrived through conversation rather than a register.
